LAGOS—Mohammed Fawehinmi Chambers has condemned what it called President Goodluck Jonathan’s poor handling of the Boko Haram menace, challenging him to either show his com petence by terminating Boko Haram within one month and start developing the nation properly, or comply with the Boko Haram request to resign.

In a statement by Mr. Mohammed Fawehinmi, the chambers also asked the President to sack allegedly uncommitted ministers.

The chambers also called on the National Assembly to shun partisan politics and put national interest at heart in the impeachment threat against the President, adding that the purported suggestive increase of five years for every elected or appointed political leader is the most absurd suggestion that ever came alive in the nation’s polity and that this had shown that the ruling party had no plan for the country.

He said: “I read with uncontrollable laughter the insult meted out to Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. What a shame! The docile nature of the President has allowed such an insignificant group of nuisances popularly known as Boko Haram to insult him, thereby insulting the whole nation, by asking him to resign.

“The President has disgraced this country enough, he must either show his competence and willingness to work by terminating Boko Haram within one month and start developing the nation properly, or comply with the Boko Haram requests.

“Those who are not willing to work and are interested in their previous domains in foreign countries should go, and be replaced immediately with people who are interested in working for Nigeria.  These include Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Minister of Finance/Coordinating Minister of  the Economy; Mr. Olusegun Aganga, Minister of Trade and Industry; Mrs. Diezani Allison-Maduke, Minister of Petroleum and Resources; and  Prof. Bart Nnaji- Minister of Power.

 

Dana Air Crash: preliminary report from Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB)

The Accident Investigation Bureau has submitted a  detailed preliminary report on the ill fated Dana Air  crash of MD83 (5N-RAM) which happened on a black Sunday in Lagos on June 3, 2012. The report determines the main facts about flight 992.

On June 3, 2012 about 15:45 hours[1], 5N-RAM, a Boeing MD-83, a domestic scheduled commercial flight, operated by Dana Airlines Limited as flight 992 (DAN 992), crashed into a densely populated area in Iju- Ishaga during a forced landing following a total loss of power in both engines while on approach to Muhammed Murtala Airport (LOS), Lagos, Nigeria. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed at the time and the airplane was on an instrument flight plan. All of the 153 persons aboard the airplane, including the 6 crew members were fatally injured. There were 10 confirmed ground fatalities. The airplane was destroyed.  There was post impact fire. The flight originated at Abuja (ABV) and the destination was LOS.

The airplane was on the fourth flight segment of the day, consisting of two round-trips between Lagos and Abuja.  The accident occurred during the return leg of the second trip.  DAN 992 was on final approach for runway 18R at LOS when the crew reported the total loss of power.

According to interviews, the flight arrived in ABV as Dana Air flight 993 about 1350.  According to Dana Air ground personnel, routine turn-around activities occurred, including refueling of the airplane.   DAN 992 initiated engine startup at 1436, taxied to the runway and was later airborne at 1458 after the flight had reported that it had a fuel endurance of 3.5 hours.  Shortly after takeoff, DAN 992 reported 1545 as the estimated time of arrival at LOS as the flight climbed to a cruise altitude of 26,000 ft[2]. DAN0992 made contact with Lagos Area Control Center at 1518 hours.

The cockpit voice recorder (CVR) retained about 31 minutes of the flight and starts about 1515 at which time the captain and first officer were in a discussion of a non-normal condition regarding the correlation between the engine throttle setting and an engine power indication[3].  However, they did not voice concerns then that the condition would affect the continuation of the flight.  The flight crew continued to monitor the condition and became increasingly concerned as the flight transition through the initial descent from cruise altitude at 1522 and the subsequent approach phase.

DAN 992 reported passing through 18,100 and 7,700 ft, respectively, at 1530 and 1540 hours. After receiving a series of heading and altitude assignments from the controller, DAN 992 was issued the final heading to intercept the final approach course for runway 18R.

During the period of 1537 and 15:41 the flight crew engaged in pre-landing tasks including deployment of the slats, and extension of the flaps and landing gear.  At 15:41:16 the first officer (FO) inquired, "both engines coming up?" and the captain (Capt) replied “negative.” The flight crew subsequently discussed and agreed to declare an emergency.  At 1542:10, DANA 992 radioed an emergency distress call indicating "dual engine failure . . . negative response from throttle."

At 1542:35, the flight crew lowered the flaps further and continued with the approach and discussed landing alternatively on runway 18L.  At 15:42:45, the Capt reported the runway in sight and instructed the FO to raise the flaps up and 4 seconds later to raise the landing gear.

At 15:43:27 hours, the Capt informed the FO "we just lost everything, we lost an engine. I lost both engines".  During the next 25 seconds until the end of the CVR recording, the flight crew was attempting to restart the engines.

The airplane crashed in a residential area about 5.8 miles north of LOS. The airplane wreckage was on approximately the extended centerline of runway 18R.  During the impact sequence, the airplane struck an incomplete building, two trees and three buildings. The wreckage was confined, with the separated tail section and engines located at the beginning of the debris field.

The airplane was mostly consumed by post crash fire. The tail section, both engines and portions of both wings, representing only about 15% of the airplane were recovered from the accident site for further examination.
The two flight recorders, the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and the flight data recorder (FDR) were analysed at the facilities of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Washington, D.C., USA.  The solid state based memory in the CVR was in good condition and retained 31 minutes of audio information.  The digital tape based memory in the FDR succumbed to the post crash fire and melted, consequently no data could be recovered.

The captain, age 55, held an airline transport pilot license with type ratings in the A-320[4], DC-9, FK-28[5], and SF-340[6].  He had over 18,116 hours of total time, including 16,416 hours of pilot-in-command time (PIC).  The captain had 7,461 hours in the accident model airplane all of which was as PIC.  He was employed with Dana Air on 14 March 2012. He began flying line operations for the company in late May 2012 and had since accrued over 120 hours of flight time. The captain had acquired about 3, 78, and 116 flight hours, respectively, in the preceding 24 hours, 30 and 90 days.

The first officer, age 34, held a commercial pilot license he was type rated in MD-83.  He had 1,143 hours of total time, including about 200 hours as pilot-in-command.  The first officer had 808 hours in the accident model airplane all of which was second-in-command.  He had been previously employed with Dana Air as the Director of Cabin Service before he was hired as a pilot about January 2011.  The first officer had accrued about 3, 42, and 154 flight hours, respectively, during the preceding 24 hours, 30 and 90 days.

The airplane was manufactured in 1990 and according to maintenance records it had accumulated 60,846 hours  (35,219 cycles) of total time.  The left and right engines respectively had 54,322 (30,933 cycles) and 26,025 (12,466 cycles) hours of total time since new.  A review of the aircraft technical logs did not reveal of the previous 30 days did not indicate a condition.  The airplane had last undergone maintenance on 1st June 2012, and after a return to service flight on 2nd June 2012, it was operated on four revenue flights (two round trips between LOS and ABV) and another four flights on 3rd June 2012.

Fueling records indicated the airplane was uplifted with 8000 lbs of fuel before departure from ABV. The flight crew reported to ATC they had 26,000 lbs of total fuel.  Preliminary analysis of fuel samples from the refueling truck and the supply tank at ABV were negative for contamination.

The investigative activities have included, in part, visual examination of the aircraft wreckage, review of maintenance records and other historical information of the aircraft, documentation of the training and experience of the flight crew, determination the chronology of the flight, review of recorded data, reconstructing the aircraft refueling, and collection of related fuel samples, and interviews of relevant personnel.

Future investigative activities will include, but is not limited to, the detailed examination of the engines, further testing of fuel samples, continued factual gathering of relevant historical, operational, maintenance and performance information of the accident airplane in addition to other similar airplane models, further development of the background of the flightcrew, further analysis of the CVR audio recording and review of pertinent issues associated with regulatory oversight.

As the State of Occurrence, the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) has instituted an investigation in accordance with the standards and recommendations specified in the provisions of Annex 13 of the International Civil Aviation Organization.  As the State of manufacture of the airplane and engine, a US Accredited Representative has been appointed and assisted by US technical advisors from the NTSB, US Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing Airplane Company, and Pratt & Whitney Engines.

In accordance with Annex 13, "the sole objective of the investigation of an accident or incident shall be the prevention of accidents and incidents.  It is not for the purpose of this activity to apportion blame or liability." 
Accordingly, the AIB with the participation of the parties, including the NCAA, will seek to identify any areas of safety concerns during the investigation and implement the appropriate actions for correction or improvement. 

The content of this report is based on preliminary information. The Bureau will continue to conduct the investigation in a meticulous and methodical manner and release facts as they become validated.

Some pro-democracy groups converged today June 12, 2012 at the Moshood Abiola Crescent in Toyin street Ikeja Lagos, Nigeria in honour of the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola whose credible election was annuled by former Nigerian head of state, General Ibrahim Babangida. This unfortunate incident led to the detention of Moshood Abiola who unfortunately died in the struggle in 1998.

On May 29, 2012, the president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan decided to honour him by renaming the Unversity of Lagos after Abiola. This change of name brought about widespread protest by students of University of Lagos and other pro-democracies groups.

Right there in the house of the Late business mogul, the Matriach of the Fawehinmi`s urged the government to listen to the voice of the students of the university of Lagos by not changing the name of the university as annouced by the president last month.

She suggest that instead of renaming UNILAG government should rather upgrade Moshood Abiola polytechnic into a Federal University with every single meaningful faculty of a first class University like University of Lagos so that it grows like the foremost federal universities in Nigeria namely: University of Lagos, University of Benin, University of Ibadan,University of Nigeria(Nsukka), Obafemi Awolowo University(Renamed by decree promulgated by Ibrahim badamosi Babangida IBB), University of Jos, Ahmadu Bello University etc.

The Nigerian Senate on June 5, 2012  ordered the Director General of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority, Harold Demuren, to step aside until the conclusion of investigations into the Dana plane crash which claimed hundreds of lives on June 3, 2012 in Iju-Ishaga Lagos Nigeria.

This plane made an emergency landing on May 2012 and instead of NCAA to ground the aircraft, they praised the pilots for a job well done.

ANOTHER BLACK SUNDAY FOR NIGERIANS

·         At about 3.00pm Nigerian time, a commercial airline conveying one hundred and fifty three passengers which included Dr. Levi Ajuonuma NNPC`s group general manager, public affairs,Ehime Aikhomu, son of late Augustus Aikhomu,Nigeria’s former chief of general staff, some members of staff of First City Momument Bank(FCMB),crashed at Iju-Ishaga, Lagos Nigeria on June 3, 2012, about four minutes into landing at the Murtala Mohammed Airport. The plane which, departed Abuja for Lagos, left behind no survivors and reports have it that at Iju-Ishaga where the plane crashed, over one hundred and fifty people died. Investigations later revealed that the Blackbox has been found and the police are in custody of it.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan has declared a three-day mourning period.

HEALING HEART FOUNDATION THRILLS OSHODI PUPILS ON CHILDREN’S DAY

Recently, pupils of the Estate Nursery and Primary School Isolo and five other public schools from around the low-income areas of Oshodi-Isolo area of Lagos had a blast that would last in their young memories in a long time.

On May 26, the Healing Heart Foundation, a charity, nongovernmental organisation, threw a children’s party to mark this year’s children’s day.

Educative and entertaining programes were packaged by the foundation to commemorate this year’s tomorrow’s leaders’ day with the theme : “Treasure Our Children”.

Commenting on the organisation’s decision to mark the occasion for children, the president of the NGO, Rev. (Mrs.) Sophy Mbanisi said : “catering for the poor and needy in our society is our responsibility in Healing Heart, while showing love to humanity is one of our organisation’s goals. These children are God’s gifts to us, and it is our duty to celebrate and make life sweet for them’’, she said. ‘’ They are our hope, joy, life and security for tomorrow. It is because of them we (parents) toil day and night to see that they are properly positioned in the society in future. They deserve the best as leaders of tomorrow; Nigeria’s hope rests on these little ones. They are indeed our treasure,” she added.

Present to celebrate and educate the children on the benefits of writing as a career was Mrs. Betty Abah, an award winning journalist is a poet who has authored several books. She is the gender focal person of Environmental Rights Action (ERA, an NGO). She advised the children against losing focus through peer pressures and to endeavour to read so as to be good leaders, professionals and writers in the future.

A representative of the Bring-Back the Book, an initiative of President Jonathan, Mr. Nsikan Udo, a programme manager advised the pupils as well as donated reading and writing materials to them and their schools.

Mr. Atanda Shobowale and Mr. Oladipo K.M. from School Services in Local Government Education Authority Oshodi/Isolo graced the occasion.

Activities ranging from debate, games, drama, dancing competition, cultural dance and poem recitals were performed by the children.

The icing on the cake was the cutting of the birthday cake by children born in the month of May. The cake was provided by Mrs. Mbanisi, who incidentally was also born in the month of May.

Corporate bodies like Nestle Foods, Ranona Limited and Dansa Foods donated their products for the events.

'Environmentalists Query World Bank's Honesty on Climate Change initiatives'

Does the World Bank mean well for developing nations? When they announce their 'good intentions' on salvaging us, should we trust them or take their words with a large dose of salt?

These contentious issues were among those discussed at a two-day workshop held recently in Lagos by the Environmental Rights Action\Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA\FoEN).

With the theme, 'Exposing the World Bank's Complicity in Worsening the Climatic Conditions of African Communities', it examined the negative impacts of the West African Gas Pipelines (WAGP) on communities in Nigeria, Ghana and Togo through which the pipelines traverse. The workshop paid particular focus on the global financial body's interest in climate financing, as participants wondered; 'how can World Bank claim to be honestly keen on mitigating the impacts of climate change when it at the same time enthusiastically finances projects such as the WAGP which worsens climate change conditions in poor and defenseless communities, when it impoverish their lives by polluting their water bodies, forcefully annex lands, under-pay or refuses to pay compensation for lands taken among other oppressive measures?

The workshop which had representatives from WAGP host communities in Badagry, Lagos Nigeria as well as Friends of the Earth, Ghana and Friends of the Earth Togo, similarly witnessed presentations and discussion sessions presided over by Barrister Chima Williams, Head, Legal Resources of ERA from the Benin City headquaters of the ngo, Noble Wadzah of FoE Ghana and Kokou Elorm of FoE Togo. Betty Abah, Gender Focal Person, ERA and coordinator of the workshop also gave presentation on how women's health, livelihoods etc in all the impacted countries were affected, having been to several of them and discovered that 'it is the same sad story, the same story of socio-economic dislocation and broken promises.'

There was also a provocative presentation from Mrs. Victoria ibezim-Ohaeri, ED of Spaces for Change, formerly with SERAC, on 'The Legal Options'. Another was by Mrs. Sophia Mbanise, founder of Healing Hearts Foundation, (a charity ngo focused on widows and orphans) on 'Wounded Women'.

Among the several community reps from Badagry representing Ajido, Imeke and Araromi communities in Badagry was Chief Temitope Agemo, the Oba-elect of Araromi-Ale.
Discussions and strategy sessions on the second day climaxed in a press briefing with the FoE countries' reps and community people fielding questions from journalists drawn from the electronic and print media.

It was a fun filled Sunday for those who graced the show that involved two great Juju music icons in Nigeria. Evangelist Ebenezer Obey who clocked 70 and King Sunny Ade who marked his 50^th year on staged did a live performance at the Harbour Point event centre in Victoria Island Lagos on May 27, 2012. The hall which was filled to it`s capacity witnessed dignitaries from all walks of life. The concert also unveiled the mentors of the great music icons (Ebenezer Obey and Sunny Ade). Fatai Rolling Dollars of WAN KERE SI NUMBER WA is Evangelist Obey`s mentor and Moses Olaiya aka Baba Sala is Sunny Ade`s mentor. The event was also used by the organisers to raise funds for the less priviledge in the society.

CRISIS ROCKS FIRST CITY MOMUMENT BANK`S ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

About three minutes into the 29^th annual general meeting of First City Monument Bank which was held at the Muson Centre in Onikan Lagos Nigeria on May 21, 2012, and presided over by the Bank`s Chairman, Jonathan Long, a young man in the audience stood up in anger and ordered that the meeting should be stopped. The Chairman pretended not to hear and the young man kept shouting at the top of his voice to an extent that he got recognition from top shareholders like Sunny Nwosu and others who actually pacified him in other to allow the meeting hold.The reason for the young man`s anger was the fact that most shareholders were outside the meeting hall queuing to collect the Bank`s branded bag containing a take away pack that was meant for shareholders. These shareholders should be present in the meeting before the meeting can commence he argued. After some few minitues, he was pacified with array of packs and the meeting continued leaving behind shareholders who had no voice at the entrance of hall to battle for the pack which at the end did not go round.

CHELSEA F.C. WINS EUROPEAN CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The prediction of the Nigerian supporters of Chelsea football club of England as the team to win this year`s (2012) champions league trophy came to manifestation this night as Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich on their soil via penalites. Victor Abraham a carpet retailer in Ikeja Lagos said even if it`s half zero, I know Chelsea will win this trophy. When asked why he was so confident about Chelsea`s victory over Bayern, he pointed at his shop and said if we don`t (Chelsea) win this trophy today (May 19, 2012) come to my shop and call me a bastard. You have not answered the question, why do you think Chelsea will win? Look oga he replied in Pidgin English saying wetin I talk Na him dey happen, Chelsea don win this one simple.

Another Chelsea fan Kehinde Coker also known as oldskool who works with Ikeja Local Government also said hours before the match that Chelsea will be crowned at the end of the day. Why? He said I believe in them. Hours before the match was played, Chelsea fans in Ikeja were already celebrating Chelsea`s victory in advance as a little boy in Chelsea`s colour displayed a trophy to symbolise Chelsea`s victory over Bayern Munich. Fortunately, hours after, the prediction of the Nigerian supporters came to past as Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich in Germany via penalty shoot out to win this year`s European Champions league.

EIGHTEEN YEAR OLD WOMAN AND FOUR OTHER GIRLS ESCAPED BEING RAPED BY NIGERIAN POLICEMEN

Crusade For Justice, a non Governmental Organisation organised a lecture with the theme-HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS AND ABUSES ON THE NIGERIAN ROADS at Sheraton Hotel in Lagos on May 8, 2012. The lecture was delivered by Professor Akin Oyebode (Professor of International Law). The Prof. made it known that Law enforcement agents must respect the rights of Road users in the country. He said the years of the locust by which the orge of military dictatorship had since been characterized were particularly acute in relation to abuse of the rights of Nigerians by rampaging hordes of uniformed personnel who envinced scant regard for civility and respect for their compatriots. This has been particularly so when ordinary citizens were caught in traffic logjams which impeded movement of the khaki-clad lords of the manor, ostensibly, on urgent national assignment. This hapless victims of the impunity of these lords of the manor were not spared of instruments of terror and intimidation, raging from sirens, Horse whips and even gun-shots in a bid to exact right of way from the “bloody civilian” who dared stand their way and remind all and sundry who was boss. This act is a Human Right violation and abuse on the Nigerian Road. After a wonderful lecture, the audience where asked to ask question, rather than ask question, Mrs. Mandy Asagba took the house back memory lane of how she escaped being raped by armed policemen alongside four other girls. According to her, she was a stucent of the University of Benin in Abraka campus studying Political Science and she had just finished her exams so she had to travelling to Lagos for her holiday. She boarded a vehicle and inside the vehicle were four other girls who were students and where heading to Lagos for their holiday. I was eighteen years then she said. On our way to benin, we met a Road block and the Policemen stopped the vehicle, did the necessary inspection, then asked us( Five girls) to come down, we came down and to our surprise, they asked the vehicle to go and the vehicle left. We were forced into the bush by the policemen who later asked us to undress. I and the other four refused and I started screeming, but as God will have it, one of my lecturers, Rev. Echecube came to our resue. If not for God, we would have been raped says Mandy Asagba who was then Miss Mandy Demechi. That experience made switch from political science to Law said Mandy.

Another example of Road abuse was stated by Rev. Tunji Adebiyi Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Regional Integration. According to him, a Bishop was travelling and he met a Road block and after the policemen had finished searching and found not incriminating, they then asked him why he was travelling alone? He responded that he was not travelling alone and that he was travelling with God the father, Son, Holyspirit, God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and quickly one of them answered oga, you are carring overload, this he said is a Human Right Violation and Abuse on the Nigerian Road.

Another example that was sighted was by Leonard Dibia, director access for Justice. He said a justice was travelling to his home town and decided to drive himself, after some kilometres, he met some policemen and they did all the search and found nothing, then one said why is your engine this dirty, don`t you know it`s a crime? Then the Man (Justice) then identified himself and they started begging these and more are what Nigerians experience on the Roads and according to Barr. Richard Nwankwo President/Founder of Crusade For Justice the organisers of the lecture, said that the purpose of the lecture was to create awareness to the Nigerian public that when they experience similar situations, they should know that their rights are infringed on and that they have every right to re-dress them legally.
