100m: Egwero, Metu, Emelizie crash

Obinna Metu of Nigeria, in green has crashed out
Nigeria’s trio of Obinna Metu, Ogho Oghene-Egwero and Peter Emelizie yesterday crashed out in the first round of the men’s 100m at the ongoing London Olympics. In what represents a sorry state of men’s athletics in Nigeria, the trio were unable to meet the qualifying standard in their respective heats.
First to fail was Oghene-Egwero, who finished sixth in heat four, won by world record holder and defending Olympic champion, Usain Bolt.
The Nigerian returned a time of 10.38secs, while Bolt clocked 10.09. Next to follow Oghene out of the 100m was Metu, whose 10.35secs in the heat 5 was only good enough to guarantee him a fifth place finish while another Jamaican, Asafa Powell easily won the race in 10.04secs.
Completing the Nigerian disaster was Emelizie, who finished fifth in heat 6 with a time of 10.22secs but was unable to break into the next round of the event. Despite his ouster, Emelizie would feel good about the time that he returned, which represents a personal best for the 24 year-old emerging track star.
Jamaica’s Yohan Blake won the heat with a time of 10.00secs. US sprinter, Justin Gatlin recorded the fastest time in the heats held yesterday with a time of 9.97secs.

INEC has failed, cries Oshiomhole

INEC has failed, cries Oshiomhole

Edo state governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole says INEC has failed in its responsibility to conduct a free poll in the state, warning of impending trouble if  the true winner of the polls is not declared.
The  governor who gave the warning today during an interview with newsmen at the Iyamho primary school, Iyamho, Etsako West Local Government Area said there can be no winner when the people are not allowed  to vote.
“They plan not to bring out the voting materials on time and as we speak in Oredo Local government area, Benin City and Egor local government area, the heart of Benin City materials have not got to majority of the polling booths after 11 am and  at the  New Era college upper mission road, they brought fake voters register different from the one the people registererd,” he noted.
According to him “if accreditation is to stop by 12pm and by 11 am, it is after 11 am now, there are no materials  in some polling booths, it then means Prof. Atahiru Jega and INEC  have no plans to conduct election. The whole  idea is to frustrate the people so that they will not be able to vote, and they will declare a fake result.”
The governor maintained that  “Prof Jega and INEC have been an embarrassment to the nation. I am in shock with all the arrangements they have made sensitizing the people, and I told them, INEC need to be sensitized.  INEC is the weakest link in the Nigeria democratic chain. I have no faith in what INEC is doing in Benin City.
“This is designed for where majority of the people are denied the right to vote and this time around I have told them this country either decides on whether to move on or move back, I see sponsored editorials saying whatever  happens we will go to court, but today  we have to sort out the issues once and for all, “ the governor added.
Comrade Oshiomhole said he holds  Prof. Jega responsible for the failure of the election and for disenfranchising the people  as INEC has connived with the Peoples Democratic Party to involve in scientific rigging.
“They planned it and executed it this way. It is a shame that they have programmed this to embarrass the Nigeria nation. If INEC do not allow the people to vote and they pronounce the winner there will be trouble .
He said,  “fifty five percent of voters are in Edo South and forty percent in Benin City, and they think they can deprive the people the opportunity to vote.”
In his words, “ Prof. Jega has failed up because I wrote a petition that they are buying voters card. We will all go to court before God. They know that if it is two people remaining they will not vote for them”

Police comb Farouk Lawan’s home for $620,000 bribe cash

Lawan

The police launched a search for the $62,0000 allegedly collected as bribe by Represenative Farouk Lawan from oil magnate, Mr. Femi Otedola, yesterday.
For two hours, a team of policemen combed the Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja residence of the suspended chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Ad hoc committee on Fuel Subsidy management, looking for the money which they intend to use as possible exhibit against him.
His lawyers, Mr. Israel Olorundare  (SAN) and Mr.  Sam Ologunorisa (SAN) were not allowed to witness the search.
Although it was evident that Lawan would spend the weekend in police custody, his lawyers remained hopeful of securing bail for him last night.
It was gathered that Lawan was taken to his house for the search for the bribe money and other evidence.
Only $10,000 was found during the search but it was not known whether it was part of the alleged bribe. Lawan is sticking to his resolve to make the money available only in court.
The police seized his international passport.
A reliable source said: “They brought the lawmaker from his detention cell in FCID in Area 10 to his residence in the morning for what they termed a‘comprehensive’ search.
“It was obvious that they were looking desperately for bribe sum, having screened Lawan’s accounts and discovered that it was not deposited in any bank.
“Throughout the interrogation, the lawmaker was adamant in not disclosing where the bribe sum was kept. He said since Otedola said it was a sting operation, the onus lies on those who conducted same to produce the bribe sum.”
This did not stop the STF coordinator, CP Ali Amodu and his team from continuing with their questioning of Lawan at the Force Headquarters.
A top police source said: “We are still investigating him; we are not in a hurry to release him on bail at all. He might be here till Monday or Tuesday when we would have finished our preliminary findings and submit a report to the IGP.
“It is true we searched his house but we discovered that because of the time lag, he had taken time to clear his residence of vital evidence.
“But we are exploring other clues. That is why we are detaining him till next week. Our target is to locate the bribe sum and retrieve it.”
On the $10,000 found in the house, the police source said: “Even though we were looking for something bigger, like $1 million, we could only get $10,000 from his house.
“We could not achieve much in getting the bribe sum because he came on his own. We did not surprise him. Police record more success with surprise search.
“But we have seized his international passports. He cannot travel till we have concluded our investigation.”
His lead counsel, Mr. Olorundare (SAN) said: “It is true they retrieved $10,000 from his house. And when Lawan was asked, he told the police ‘I travel a lot, even at short notice. You should expect me to have some money at home.’
“It was disappointing that the police told us at about 6 pm that they are not going to release him. They said they are still investigating the case.
“We are surprised that they could do that. We hope that they will allow sanity to prevail.
“But if they detain him beyond what is legally allowed within the law of the land, we will certainly go to court to secure bail for him. We insist that the offence is ordinarily bailable.”
The lawmaker was returned to his cell at the Force CID Annex at Area 10 where some journalists were detained last year.
“Lawan is sharing cell with other criminals in Area 10 Annex until he secures bail. He was really given a rousing welcome on Thursday night by those he met in detention.
‘There are VIP, ECOMOG, ABUJA , and other types of cells in the annex.”
The Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Mohammed Bello Adoke (SAN) was said to have written to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) yesterday to take over the case and the prosecution of those found culpable in the bribery saga.
The letter was delivered to the Chairman of ICPC, Barrister Nta Ekpo.
“The offence falls within the purview of the ICPC Act, that is why the case has been referred to the agency,” a source familiar with the matter said.
“The case file will certainly go to ICPC next week for prosecution of any suspect with prima facie case.”

DECLARE MKO ABIOLA EX-PRESIDENT OF NIGERIA- FAMILY MEMBERS:

Late Mohood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

The family of late MKO Abiola and some South West Governors on June 12, 2012 appealed to the Federal Government to officially declare the late businessman and politician, a former president of Nigeria.

The family said recognizing him as an ex president is the best way to immortalize the acclaimed winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, their argument was that, 'Abiola offered himself as the sacrificial lamb for democracy to take its root in Nigeria'. When asked Moji Danisa a veteran journalist with AIT if the request of the family members and some South west governors was right, she said yes, it was. According to the light skinned woman, Abiola should be declared a former president of Nigeria because he was declared winner of the June 1993 election and more over, his declaration as a former president of the Federal republic of Nigeria will heal old wounds and mend fences.Speaking to another person who begged me in pidgin English saying I no want yoruba man trouble ooo. This na OPC struggle so no mention my name ooo. You see, what they are asking for is not a reality shekena. Why? I asked, he said because the man was not sworn in as a president simple.

Photo story on the voters registration exercise in Ishasi Ifo Local government area in Ogun state Nigeria

The voter’s registration exercise in Zumuratu Islamiya primary school at Ishasi Akute Ogun state Nigeria towards the upcoming general elections coming up soon was described by people as unsuccessful on the second day of the exercise 16th January 2011 .The exercise which is billed to last for 15 days started yesterday the 15th of January 2011 with just three people who managed to register. There were three registration tables and over 1000 people waiting to be registered yesterday. But unfortunately the equipments needed to be used for the exercise were not functional. Only one of the tables managed to register three people out of about 1000 people who came out for the registration. Today the second day of the registration recorded a poor turn out as a result of what happened yesterday. Despite the low turn out, the story still remained the same as the equipments still refused to work. As at 2.00 pm today, nobody was registered.
Pix above shows Mrs Makinde Left who could not go through the normal process of all her fingers being printed because the equipments were not working well. The corper had to register her left thumb print alone claiming that was the new directive she was given. This development made people angry and they all went home.Their reason was that all fingers must be printed and not one.

Community leader Mr.Femi Makinde blamed the equipments for the poor registration exercise.
