On October 9, 2011 Nigerian Idol season 2 began, and about two days less than six months, it produced a new music talent named Mercy Chinwo from Rivers state in Nigeria. Mercy beat Joseph Anthony Ekpo aka Joe Blue in the finals to go home with a cheque of 7.5 Million Nigerian Naira, a recording contract and a brand new hyundai SUV jeep worth 5.5 Million Naira. Joe Blue who came second will go home with 1.5 and Steve Onochie the third place winner went home with 1 Million Naira. A group of about five people consisting of two ladies and three guys were not happy with the way the second and third place winners were treated. One of them compared Nigerian Idol to Project Fame which is sponsored by MTN, and said that the first three in Project Fame Music Reality Show are rewarded generously. One quickly interupted and said yes you are right. They gave the first three cars in the last Project Fame. Yes Mercy deserves the victory but the one Million given to Joe from my own point of view is too small compared to the fantastic performance he put up and it`s like Nigerian Idol is designed in such a way that winner takes it all he said.In agreement, the five friends believe that what goes to the first and second runners-up is too small. Despite the observation of the five friends, the event went well and it recorded a huge sucess in terms of security, adminstration and orderliness. They studio was jam-packed with people and the artistes invited did not disappoint the audience. The top twelve contestants opened the floor with the Nigerian National Anthem and one after the other, the invited artistes began to mount the stage after being introduced by anchor of the occasion. The first invited artiste to perform on stage was Chuddy K, followed by W4, then MI and Wizkid. After all the ceremonies and entertainment, Mercy Chinwo was eventually declared the winner of Nigerian Idol season 2, on April 7, 2012. Picture above shows the top twelve L-R Diwari, Sly 1, Ibinabo, Nikky, Steve, Najite, Joe, Giami, Adum, Ayo, Chinedu and Mercy singing the Nigerian National Anthem at the event. |
